Introduction: Reducing stigma

As we learned in Module 1, there are currently over 564,000 Canadians living with dementia and approximately 937,000 will be living with dementia in the next 15 years. That being said, there is still quite a bit of stigma around dementia in society. In order to help reduce fear, misunderstanding, and negative consequences associated with stereotypes, it is helpful to shift our thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs from a negative view to a more positive view of aging and dementia. This will help people living with dementia feel more welcome, supported, and included.

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  1. Understand ageism and learn to recognize forms of ageism
  2. Understand where stigma comes from and how it impacts people living with dementia
  3. Reflect on strategies to address stigma through dementia-inclusive language
