Introduction: Exploring personal expressions

As we described in Module 4, people living with dementia often experience changes in how they communicate. As you can imagine, when someone experiences a change in their ability to communicate, it can make it difficult and frustrating to express what they are thinking, feeling and experiencing. They may need to communicate using actions, gestures and reactions. We call these “personal expressions”.

This module provides an introduction to the term “personal expressions”, and why it is important to understand the meaning behind them.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Define the term ‘personal expressions’ and understand the appropriate language to describe them
  2. Understand why it is important to know the meaning behind personal expressions
  3. Recognize the types of personal expressions
  4. Identify causes of personal expressions
  5. Describe what to consider when interpreting the personal expressions of people living with dementia
