About this Course

CHOICE+ is a research-informed program that uses a relationship-centred approach to help team members improve the mealtime experience in LTC and retirement homes, ensuring people’s preferences are respected, dignity is honoured, and the dining environment is positive. Designed to help build organizational capacity, CHOICE+ provides team members with a framework to make change.

Co-created by Heather Keller (RD, PhD, FDC, FCAHS, Schlegel Research Chair in Nutrition and Aging), and Sarah Wu (PhD, Gerontological Researcher), CHOICE+ is guided by six evidence-informed principles:

  • Connecting: ensuring people have meaningful conversations and opportunities to socialize.
  • Honouring dignity: making sure decisions, choices, and preferences are respected.
  • Offering support: supporting people’s individual needs.
  • Identity: knowing and accepting people as unique individuals.
  • Creating opportunities: supporting active mealtime participation.
  • Enjoyment: creating a warm, welcoming dining environment.
  • Inspire staff to make improvements and incorporate a relationship-centred approach to care.
  • Engage key stakeholders to build commitment and increase staff participation.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in mealtime practices at your retirement, assisted living, and LTC homes.
  • Track progress and celebrate wins to maintain momentum.

You’re encouraged to complete this self-paced e-learning course all at once, but don’t worry, you can come back to it anytime. This material is here to support you through the three core stages of facilitating the CHOICE+ program in your home: Getting Started, Engaging Partners, and Making Changes.
